Ravishankar Jayadritha Shastri is a former coach of the Indian national cricket team, cricket commentator, and former captain of the Indian cricket team. As a player, he represented the Indian national cricket team from 1981 to 1992, playing in two Test matches and One Day Internationals. Although he began his career as a left-arm spin bowler, he later transitioned into an all-rounder. At the age of 31, he was forced to retire due to recurring knee injuries. In 2014, he became the head coach of the Indian cricket team and was reappointed as head coach for the senior men's team in 2019 until the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021.

As a cricketer, Shastri was known for his trademark "chapati shot" to defend. His career highlight came in 1985 when he was part of the Indian team that won the World Championship of Cricket held in Australia. He was considered a potential captain, but his image off the field, injury concerns, and tendency to lose form at critical times ultimately resulted in him captaining India in only one Test match. In domestic cricket, he played for the Mumbai team and led them to victory in the Ranji Trophy championship in his final year playing. In 1995, he made his debut as a television commentator for the Mumbai World Masters tournament and went on to serve ICC and BCCI as an interim official and goodwill ambassador for UNICEF until his contract ended in 2008. He then joined Sony Max as a commentator for the Indian Premier League and was appointed as a celebrity torchbearer for the Oman leg of the Summer Olympics Torch Relay in 2008.

Strength

The Chennai Super Kings have always been known for their all-rounders and their formidable spin department. And this time they have upped the ante by adding Ben Stokes to their squad at a whopping 16.25 Crores. With Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali already performing exceptionally well for the team, the addition of Stokes can only serve to solidify their strength in the all-rounders category. And let's not forget about the surprise pick of Indian All-Rounder Shivam Dube for 4 Crore. But it's not just the all-rounders that make this team a force to be reckoned with. Their spinners are some of the best in the business, with Ali, Jadeja, Mitchell Santner and Maheesh Theekshana leading the charge. Playing their home matches in the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will only give them a further boost and make it extremely difficult for their opponents to come out with a win. One thing is clear, the Chennai Super Kings are a well-rounded team that will be a formidable force this season.

As CSK gears up for the upcoming IPL season, all eyes are on the return of the legendary MS Dhoni as the captain. Dhoni's leadership skills and ability to keep his cool in the toughest of situations have been one of the biggest strengths of the team. However, this may well be his last season as captain. In the midst of this, CSK has also found some talented players like Mukesh Choudhary and Matheesha Pathirana who could be crucial additions to the team's bowling attack. With all these factors to consider, it will be interesting to see how the Chennai Super Kings perform in IPL 2023.

Weakness

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may not have the strongest pace bowling lineup in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, as they didn't invest in good Indian pacers. Although they secured Kyle Jamieson for a good deal of 1 Crore, there are concerns over his injury-prone nature, as he has already been ruled out of the tournament. Additionally, last year's young domestic pacers showed promise but were not entirely reliable. Mukesh Choudary and Deepak Chahar are the only reliable pace bowlers, but Chahar missed the entire IPL season last year. Even the team's main players, Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja, are coming back from injuries and may not be able to play the whole season. Stokes, in particular, will not be available for Qualifiers and the final if CSK makes it that far. Despite these challenges, CSK fans remain hopeful that their team will put up a good fight.

In addition to their on-field success, the Super Kings have also been a commercially successful franchise. The brand value of the Super Kings in 2019 was estimated to be around ₹732 crore (roughly $104 million), making them one of the most valuable IPL franchises.

Additionally, Faf du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo were brought back into the side using RTM.

Chennai's campaign started off with a thrilling one-wicket win over the Mumbai Indians in the first match of the season. Playing their first home game in Chennai, the Super Kings successfully managed to chase down a target of 202 set by the Kolkata Knight Riders, aided by a quickfire half-century by Sam Billings. He is also the current captain of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Dhoni is considered one of the best finishers in the game and is one of the greatest wicket-keepers and captains in the history of cricket.

Dhoni's captaincy record in Tests format was mixed, leading India to a series win against New Zealand in 2008 and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (home series in 2010 and 2013) against Australia while losing to Sri Lanka, Australia, England, and South Africa by big margins in away conditions. He announced his retirement from Tests on 30 December 2014, and stepped down as captain of T20Is and ODIs in 2017. On 15 August 2020, Dhoni retired from all formats of international cricket and continues to play in the IPL.

Dhoni received India's highest sports honour, the Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award in 2008 for his outstanding achievements, and the Government of India honoured him with India's fourth civilian award, Padma Shri in 2009, and third civilian award, Padma Bhushan in 2018. He is the only cricket captain in the world to win all three of the Cricket World Cup, ICC Men's T20 World Cup, and ICC Champions Trophy.

Dhoni played for Bihar and Jharkhand Cricket team in Indian domestic cricket. Under his captaincy, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won Champions League T20 two times, in 2010 and 2014, and won the IPL titles four times, in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. He also scored 4,978 runs in IPL. Dhoni became the first player to play 200 T20 matches for Super Kings, and he is at the top of the list of most matches played in the Indian Premier League.

In 2015, the Chennai Super Kings got banned from the IPL for two years due to the illegal betting of one of their officials, Gurunath Meiyappan. In 2016, Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS), a debuting IPL franchise team, made him captain but after poor performance of the team in that season, they removed Dhoni from the captain's position and chose Steve Smith for the post. Dhoni played as wicketkeeper-batsman in 2017 season for RPS.

In the 2020 and 2021 seasons of the IPL, Dhoni failed to perform where he scored 200 runs in 14 innings in 2020 and 116 runs in 16 innings with an average of 15.29 in 2021 IPL season. Despite his recent struggles, Dhoni's achievements in the sport are impressive, and he remains one of the most respected cricketers in India and around the world.

Ruturaj Dashrat Gaikwad

Ruturaj Dashrat Gaikwad is a rising star in Indian cricket, known for his impressive performances in both domestic and international cricket. He has been playing for Maharashtra in domestic cricket and for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In July 2021, Gaikwad made his international debut for the Indian cricket team and since then, he has been a regular member of the Indian team in both the ODI and T20 formats. In his debut T20I match against Sri Lanka, he showcased his talent by scoring crucial runs for the team.

Gaikwad's consistent performances in domestic cricket led to him being appointed as the captain of Maharashtra in T20 and List A formats in 2021. Under his leadership, Maharashtra reached the Vijay Hazare Trophy final in 2022.

Chennai Super Kings recognized Gaikwad's potential early on and bought him in the player auction for the 2019 IPL season. Since then, he has been an integral part of the team and has contributed significantly to their success. He scored his first IPL century in the 2021 season and helped CSK win the championship by scoring 32 runs off 27 balls in the final.

Gaikwad's impressive performance in the IPL has made him a sought-after player in the league. He was retained by Chennai Super Kings for ₹6 crores ahead of the 2022 IPL auction, and the team once again retained him for the upcoming 2023 season for the same amount.

His selection for the Indian cricket team in 2018 was a testament to his hard work and dedication to the game.
